WHAT IS LIGHT FLICKER?
Light flicker refers to rapid changes in light intensity where the light appears to be unsteady, irregular or fluttering. Visible flicker occurs when the light reaches a frequency of below 100Hz (cycles per second), causing the light to start flashing on and off repeatedly. It is caused by fluctuating voltage in the supplied power which can vary due to the use of ballasts, dimmer switches and the like.

Flickering lights, commonly associated with fluorescent lighting such as battens and tubes, can be detrimental to your health as one of the contributing factors associated with ‘Sick Building Syndrome.’ Symptoms include migraine-inducing headaches – usually associated with flickering lights, plus blocked or runny nose, dry itchy skin, eyestrain, rashes and tiredness or difficulty with concentrating. These symptoms translate into staff sickness-related absence or in extreme cases long-term work absence. Such flicker-inducing lighting can also be very problematic for individuals with light sensitivity including autism, lupus, chronic fatigue, Lyme disease and vertigo. Short-term exposure to frequencies between 3Hz to 70Hz have been associated with epileptic seizures.
DID YOU KNOW POOR QUALITY LEDS CAN CAUSE FLICKER?
There is always a debate of poor quality LED lamps and luminaires which also cause flicker – you may have experienced this with cheap LED lamps when connecting to old style dimmer switches they flicker constantly or when the dimmer is turned very low. This is simple as there is not enough load being delivered to the lamp – irregular voltage again being the culprit. There is also the issue that the dimmer switch was designed to work with traditional lighting which has much higher loads than LED. Switching to an LED-specific dimmer should rectify the issue with reputable LED products. When installing LED Tubes the fluorescent ballast should be removed, otherwise incompatibility with the ballast and LED lamp could also result in flicker.
