EU Ban Delayed on Light Bulbs

Following on from a previous entry, we blogged about the European Commission deciding on whether to ban halogen light bulbs. The EU Commission had until April to decide whether the halogen bulb would be phased out either next year (2016) or later in 2018.

It has been decided that the halogen light bulb is to be phased out in 2018 which will follow on from the Middle East – who phased the inefficient light bulbs out last year. The reason for the two year delay, as stated by the European Commission, was because “LED technology would not be ready to replace halogen lamps by 2016”. However, there are plenty of LED lamps on the market – perhaps it is more about getting Europe ready for the ban, rather than quickly phasing out by 2016 – which of course, is only 9 months away.

The EU Commission have stated that if Europe were to switch to LED lamps, that by 2018 the amount of energy that willl be saved would be the equivalent of Portugal’s annual electricity consumption. The carbon savings alone would be 15.2m tonnes by 2025!

Switching to LED technology is a no brainer, here are Goodlight’s reasons of why you should make the switch:

  • Savings of up to 85% in energy and carbon
  • Savings of up to 95% in maintenance
  • 50,000 hour lifespan
  • Flicker-free
  • Retrofittable
  • Instant on
  • Zero maintenance
  • Toxin free
  • And more importantly, LED lamps pay for themselves within the first year!

Reduce your carbon footprint. Make the switch, make it Goodlight.
