Entertaining Sustainability Review Our 2D LED Lamp

This week we have a guest post from Entertaining Sustainability – the first one to go live on our blog, so exciting stuff.

Tim Atkinson, Technical Director, at Entertaining Sustainability recently asked to review our retrofit 2D LED Lamp, one of our hottest products at the moment. Below is what he had to say about it.

“Everyone likes a good thing, and we’re no different. We come across all sorts of things in our travels, and we think it’s only fair to share some of the really good ones with you.

Our first official ‘good thing’, then, is the Goodlight™ 2D retrofit lamp. You’ll no doubt have seen the ‘traditional’ 2D lamp around somewhere. Their distinctive shape packs a long compact fluorescent tube into a small, square area, and these are usually housed in robust fittings for outdoor use and decorative fittings for indoor applications.

As they’re compact fluorescent, they’re not exactly energy inefficient, per se, but where they are used, they’re on a lot. Toilets, corridors, fire escapes, staircases – lots of places that need illumination available a lot of the time, but often only see occasional actual demand.

Most of the big manufacturers now make new fittings with built in occupancy detectors, and have a choice of CFL or LED sources. Lots of buildings, though, still have fittings that are perfectly serviceable. You can now get LED-laden gear trays that you can replace the guts of your existing fittings with, or you can try the Goodlight 2D direct replacement.

We first came across Goodlight™ at a trade show some time ago, and have been following their product lines with interest. They specialise in LED retrofits for fluorescent fittings, and have some of the best performing lamps out there.

Goodlight™ released a 2D retrofit LED lamp last year – and it’s really rather clever. As mentioned above, because of the places 2D lamps get used, they’re on a lot, but often in little used areas. For that very reason, the Goodlight™ lamp itself contains a microwave presence detector, and, rather than completely switching off, the unit dims down to provide reassuring comfort lighting at only 3 Watts.

At full power, the lamp pulls 12 Watts, less than half of the 28 Watts that the fluorescent lamp it replaces uses. There are some other neat practical touches, too. The lamp is available in an emergency version, which uses standard rechargeable AA batteries, which are supplied, and fit into a compartment at the rear.

Thankfully, also easily accessible are the controls for setting the presence detector sensitivity and hold time, which is a major bonus while you’re getting the settings just right. There are three colour temperatures available – cool white, warm white and daylight. The efficacy (ie the amount of light you get per unit of power) is given as 104 lm/W.

The unit comes with a 50,000 hour lamp life, and is backed with a 5 year guarantee from Goodlight™ themselves. Because not all the features (e.g. emergency backup, presence detection) might be required for each fitting, different combinations are available, down to just the basic non-dimming lamp.

Like most LED retrofits for fluorescent fittings, some modification to the fitting is necessary, with the removal of the ballast from the supply circuit – full instructions are included, but if you’ve got loads to do, you might want to get someone in.

The unit feels good, professional and of very high quality, and that’s what makes it our first ever ‘good thing’ – it’s just really well thought out and executed. The quality shines through – literally.”

Thanks to Tim, a really great review that we are proud of.
